Computer Support Technician

Class specifications are intended to present a descriptive list of the range of duties performed by employees in the class. Specific! ations are not intended to reflect all duties performed within the job.

The position is part time seasonal 62.5% FTE and pays $20.02-$24.33 hourly and is based with Campus Police.

DEFINITION

To provide technical services and support to campus users of computers, campus networks, multi-media/audio-visual equipment and associated hardware and software; to deliver, setup and demonstrate use of said equipment; to provide assistance in technical analysis and feasibility studies of hardware and software utilization on campus; to operate the campus defined video distribution and teleconferencing systems and to perform a variety of technical tasks relative to assigned area of responsibility.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

This is the full journey level class within the Computer Support Technician series. Employees within this class perform the full range of duties as assigned. Positions at this level receive only occasional instruction o! r assistance as new or unusual situations arise, and are fully! aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit. This class is distinguished from the Senior Computer Support Technician in that the latter provides functional and technical input to lower level staff.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

Receives direction from higher level supervisory or management staff.

Receives functional and technical input from upper level technical staff.

EXAMPLES OF RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
Essential responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

1. Provide technical assistance to network and system users in the use of all equipment, hardware and software applications as it relates to College curriculum and business operations; troubleshoot hardware and peripherals, software and network operating problems including audio-visual/multi-media equipment.

2. Assist students, faculty and staff in understanding and abiding by the policies a! nd procedures related to use of equipment, applications and network resources.

3. Assist in the maintenance of security procedures for all computer systems, network resources and electronic data and files.

4. Deliver, install, troubleshoot, repair and/or support the operation of personal computers, audio-visual/multi-media equipment, peripheral equipment and networks as necessary for all assigned areas. Pick up and perform preventive maintenance on equipment as needed.

5. Provide technical analysis and feasibility on the use of all computer hardware and software in the College network; assist in the acquisition, distribution, installation and maintenance of software and other related network resources.

6. Operate and troubleshoot the campus defined video distribution and teleconferencing systems; set up conferences for recording or viewing purposes; record off-air programming and duplicate videos, ensuring adherence to copyright laws.
7. Coordinate the duties of student assistants and short term emp! loyees in the assigned computer lab.

8. Provide user training; design hand outs and conduct training sessions on commonly used software.

9. Assist in the installation, configuration and optimizing of network resources; modify networks and software for specific configurations in the computer labs. Participate in evaluating new equipment for purchase, provide functional testing of equipment.

10. Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.

When assigned to Publication Center:
1. Provide technical assistance to network and system users in the use of imaging equipment, including but not limited to print servers, imagine related cost accounting, web-based print submission, networked fax systems, networked pay-for-print systems, variable imaging systems, imaging kiosks, copiers, printers, and fax machines.

2. Provide hardware and software as it related to College curriculum and business operations; troubleshoot i! maging system problems.

3. Provide technical assistance to the electronic forms system, including but not limited to, electronic forms development, implementation, routing protocols, and managing user authentication.

4. Assist in the maintenance of security procedures for all networked imaging systems.

5. Install, troubleshoot, repair and/or support the operation of imaging devices and related systems as necessary.

When assigned to Campus Police:
1. Schedule and perform preventative maintenance to electronic and mechanical parking permit machines, citation machines, CCTV and alarms located throughout the District.

2. Assist in the maintenance of computer security procedures for systems, network resources, and electronic data and files.

3. Perform basic services and repairs to parking permit dispensers, handheld parking citation machines, and download information from the citation processing vendor to the depar! tment.

4. Coordinates with Information Services regarding requ! ests assigned from the Help Desk.

5. Follows District and departmental policies, procedures, practices and standards related to data services and technology.

6. Install and maintain District police computer systems in CCTV systems, alarms and parking permit machines.

7. Maintain supply and equipment inventories for CCTV, parking and alarm systems.

8. Serve as a liaison between outside contractors, vendors and District departments as it relates to gate controls, alarm systems, emergency telephones, intercoms, two way radios and personal computers.

9. Advise Information Services and/or management regarding the replacement and repair of assigned computer equipment.

10. Background investigation clearance is required

11. Work flexible hours including weekends, evenings and holidays.

QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of:

  • Methods and techniques of providing user support for computer operati! ng systems.
  • Appropriate data processing techniques, networking, operating systems, peripheral equipment, multi-media equipment and software as used in the campus network.
  • Operational characteristics of various computer systems, audio-visual/multimedia equipment, operating environments and streaming technologies over the campus IP network.
  • Computer programming, operations and principal languages as necessary for specific job assignments.
  • Desktop computer software applications used on campus in curriculum or business operations.
  • Operational hazards and standard safety precautions
Ability to:
  • Provide technical support services to all students, staff and faculty across the campus.
  • Learn new software applications quickly.
  • Learn to operate any computer or peripheral equipment as assigned.
  • Install, troubleshoot, repair and/or support personal computers, multi-media, audio-visual ! and associated peripheral equipment.
  • Provide instruction and a! ssistance to network users in hardware and software applications.
  • Demonstrate the proper use and operation of assigned equipment.
  • Set priorities and follow up on work assignments.
  • Prepare clear and concise technical materials.
  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Sensitivity to and understanding of, the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, linguistic, ethnic backgrounds and disabilities of community college students and staff.
Experience and Training Guidelines

Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Experience:
One year of experience in the provision ! of computer support services.

Training:
Equivalent to an Associates degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in computer science, business administration or a related field.

License or Certificate

Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid driver's license.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Environmental Conditions:
Field and Office environment; travel from site to site; exposure to electrical energy; work at heights; exposure to computer screens.

Physical Conditions:
Essential functions may require maintaining physical condition necessary for light lifting; climbing with both legs and arms; walking, standing or sitting for prolonged periods of time; operating computers, multi-media and audio-visual equipment.
