Receives, collects, stores, transports and releases evidence and other property held by the Police Department.

MAJOR DUTIES:
Receives, collects and logs in all incoming evidence, safekeeping and custody items from evidence lockers and found property.

Verifies evidence and accuracy of reports.

Ensures preservation of the chain of evidence by storing all items received and collected in a systematic manner.

Releases property to rightful owners and authorized persons in accordance with applicable state laws and departmental procedures.

Maintains detailed records and files on each transaction and final disposition on all evidence and property received and released.

Prepares, sends and/or transports evidence to crime laboratory.

Enters, modifies and retrieves data.

Prepares, maintains, files and retrieves a variety of forms and records.

Conducts periodic inventory. Identifies and prepares items to be auctioned, destroyed and/or donated.

Destroys narcotics and other property according to applicable law.

Responds to questions from officers and the public over the telephone and in person regarding property in custody.

Notifies rightful owners of found property.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:
Knowledge of:
Modern office procedures, practices and equipment.
Business English, spelling and punctuation.
Stock room and inventory control procedures.
Recordkeeping principles and procedures.
Regulations relating to the custody and handling of evidence.

Ability to:
Understand and apply applicable laws.
Follow oral and written instructions.
Set up and maintain accurate records and files.
File in alphabetical and numerical order.
Lift and move heavy objects.
Operate City vehicles.
Organize and locate materials.
Provide effective customer service.
Establish and maintain effective and cooperative working relationships with City employees and the public.

Skill in:
Typing at a corrected speed of 25 words per minute.
Using personal computers and various software applications.
Reading, writing and communicating at an appropriate level.

Education, Training, and Experience:
Graduation from high school or equivalent.

One (1) year of recent, paid experience working in records management, property and evidence and/or the law enforcement field which includes public contact. Bilingual proficiency in Spanish and English is desirable.

Licenses and Certificates:
Possession of a valid Class C driver license.

SELECTION PROCESS:

SELECTION PROCESS: All applicants will be reviewed and only those candidates determined to be most qualified on the basis of experience, training and education, as submitted, will be invited to participate further in the selection process. Testing will consist of the following:

Written Examination (100)
Typing/Keyboarding @ 25 wpm (Qualifying)

BACKGROUND INVESTIGATIONS: Candidates who have successfully completed all prior phases of the selection process will be subject to a thorough background investigation.

NOTE: If three or more qualified City employees apply and pass the examination, a promotional list will be established in addition to an open-competitive list. If fewer than three qualified City employees pass the examination, the appointing authority, in accordance with the City's civil service rules and regulations, can decline to use a promotional list, in which case a promotional list will not be established for this position.
