Position Overview

The Mechanical Engineering team at LeapFrog is responsible for all structural designs for p! roduct and packaging, beginning at the brainstorming phase and! continuing through production readiness. We are a global team of engineers, with team members in the United States, Hong Kong, and Shenzhen. Team skills include concept brainstorming, product architecture, CAD design, detailed mechanical analysis including FEA and mechanism design, structural packaging design, prototyping, design for manufacturability, and troubleshooting during manufacturing development.

Our team works cross functionally with many different groups during product development, such as Industrial Designers, Marketing, Program Management, Creative Art, Electrical Engineering, Content, Tooling, and Manufacturing.

The Director of Mechanical Engineering will be responsible for coordinating this global team of engineers, as well as working with the cross functional teams to develop product lines. Duties will range from long term planning and process development, to detailed product reviews. This leader must be able to interact with Senior Leader! ship as a spokesperson for our R&D group, and must also be able to “roll up the engineering sleeves” to help the team with detailed engineering and process issues as necessary.

Duties & Responsibilities

Lead, develop, and mentor a group of 10-15 engineers in a global team.

Work with cross functional teams to define future product lines and strategies.

Maintain and develop process checkpoints to ensure adherence to design standards and schedules.

Hands-on technical contribution.

Be able to highlight technical risks and drive mitigation plans.

Work with leadership peers to drive process improvements as necessary.

Present to Senior Leadership during planning phases as well as project milestones.

Support offshore manufacturing launch.

Responsible for team adherence to budget and schedule.

Education & Experience

10+ years designing consumer or similar products.
5+ years leading an engineering team.

Excellent communicatio! n skills, with a track record of success in cross functional team environments.

Must have good understanding of engineering concepts and tools, such as stress analysis, CAD tools, FEA, and manufacturing methods.

Knowledge of high volume plastics design

Must have a passion for creating high-quality, innovative products that educate and entertain kids of all ages.

Experience working with external suppliers in Asia.

Ability to work in a high intensity, lightly-structured environment.

Successful track record of juggling multiple parallel projects.

BS in Mechanical Engineering, MS preferred.
