A limited service Library Page position is available at the Santa Maria Public Library. This opening is ideal for individuals who prefer a continuous, part-time schedule. This is a year-round position with an anticipated work schedule of 19 hours per week.
DAYTIME, EVENING, SATURDAY, SUNDAY, HOLIDAYS, AND/OR OFF-SITE WORK MAY BE REQUIRED.

Under supervision, will shelve books and media; keep shelves in neat order; read shelves making sure the materials are in their proper sequence; answer magazine request calls; route, file of cards, and other materials; monitor the Computer Center; setup/take-down chairs and/or tables in meeting room(s); make every reasonable effort to continually improve the manner in which the job is performed and increase the quality of service to the public; and perform other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education/Experience
:
Must be able to read and write the English language, understand the decimal system of mathematics, and file alphabetically and numerically. Previous library experience preferred, but not required.
Knowledge of
:
Appropriate shelving techniques and filing; and principles and practices of exemplary customer service.
OR
any combination of education, training and/or work experience to demonstrate knowledge, skills, and abilities to meet the above minimum requirements.
Ability to:
Learn the organization, procedures, and operating details of the City department to which assigned; follow directions, pay attention to detail, work independently, and/or work under close supervision; communicate effectively in both oral and written form; take a proactive approach to problem solving; attend, as scheduled, on a regular basis, to effectively perform the position’s required duties and responsibility; d
emonstrate an awareness and appreciation of the cultural diversity of the community; and establish and maintain effective working relationships.
License:
If required to drive while on City business, possession of a valid and appropriate California Driver License is required. Must have and maintain a satisfactory driving record and be insurable to operate City vehicles.
TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED:
Personal computer, automated circulation system terminal, microfilm reader/printer, 10 key calculator, phone, fax, and copy machines.

The candidate with the highest test scores will be invited to appear before a panel for an oral exam.
A tentative oral interview date has been scheduled for Thursday, September 27, 2012.
The oral board will recommend a limited number of candidates to the eligibility list from which the new

openings.
